John Mayer isn’t waiting on the world to change, at least not as far as guitars go. In his desire to modernize the electric guitar, he found a kindred spirit in Paul Reed Smith, and their collaboration has created the PRS John Mayer Silver Sky. “Paul and I are crazy in different ways,” Mayer says, “He’s crazy on a build end, and I’m crazy on a feel end.”
John took a break during rehearsals for his latest world tour to show us the tones of the Silver Sky, as well as give us some insight into working with Paul in the build of this idealized version of a vintage single-coil guitar.
We didn’t want to pass up the opportunity to get John’s take on how players can work to find their own sound, and he delivered with typical Mayer eloquence; “Whatever you learn is the tip of the iceberg. Dive underwater and find the rest of the iceberg, and you can rip me off in more fundamental ways.”
With the Silver Sky, Mayer and Smith brought the fundamental qualities of their beloved vintage instruments to a brand new guitar built for the modern era. Visit your local GC to try out the Silver Sky and experience the attention paid to every detail that sets this guitar apart.
