Phil Jones Bass

collapse expand iconDescription

The Double Four is a single channel bass amplifier that has an auxiliary input for iPad/iPod, mp3 or drum machine. It features 3-band EQ that is perfectly tailored for bass guitar, headphone out jack and a line out for recording. It is ideal for all kinds of basses and can handle the open B string on a 5 string bass with ease.

The cabinet may be as small as a shoe box but it is built to the same standards of all PJB cabinets, heavily braced internally and damped with acoustic damping materials to prevent cabinet coloration that can kill the true sound of your instrument. What you hear from the Double Four is the closest you can get to how your instrument actually sounds.

The Double Four may just be a practice amp but it does not mean that it has to sound like a practice amp. The sound is huge for its size and you may find it hard to believe that all the sound from your bass is just coming out of such a tiny jewel box.

it's not the loudest, but that's not what it's for. but with a battery pack it becomes a portable amp for park jams

Apparently these negative reviewers didn't read the product description. It's a practice amp, not a gig amp. And does a great job at that Plenty loud for a small room, and very compact. I only wish an integrated DC battery system was available.

If your only disappointment is no direct out then just get a good direct box. It's too little additional money to pass it up.

Good little amp for a desktop amp at home. It won't cut a quiet rehearsal w/ drums and small PA. It will suffice for an acoustic rehearsal setting w/o PA or drums, maybe w/ a cajon. There's only so much a tiny amp w/ 2 - 4" speakers can do. A Fender Rumble 40 works better for low volume band rehearsals at 1/2 the money, and IMO it sounds better, and could work live for an acoustic act.

  • Amazing little wonder but too small

this little thing is truly amazing, those little 4' speakers sound great and its smaller that a shoe box but we live in the physical world and the sound is still transported by air, so low frequencies reach the limit of this little wonder very quickly, if used at low volume the sound is very decent. but when compared to a fender Rumble 25 ($99) which has an 8' speaker or even the Phil Jones Micro 7 (7 inch speaker+ 3' tweeter) there is no contest, the bass and headroom improves dramatically. So my recommendation is, only good for practice and or low volume acoustic duos or trios (no drums). A preamp or high pass filter before the input helps a lot.

Okay, so the Double Four really is impressive. The tone you can get out of it is super good. Don't forget. Thus is a practice amp. For gigs or rehearsals with drums, you'll probably need more amp. I really think it'd be tough to beat for solo practice or with a couple of guitars. It's the perfect size for travel. If you're thinking about getting one, go ahead. You'll like it!
