PreSonus Studio Channel

Description
The Studio Channel tube channel strip from PreSonus delivers high-quality audio processing for musicians and producers. The Studio Channel combines a class A tube preamplifier, VCA compressor and 3-band parametric equalizer in one convenient rack-mountable unit. Designed for recording vocals, acoustic guitars, bass, piano and more, the Studio Channel provides stunning sound and maximum control over your tone.
Class A Tube Preamplifier for Warm, Smooth Sound
The Studio Channel features a high-output 12AX7 tube preamplifier for rich, full sound with plenty of headroom. Dual gain and tube drive controls offer a range of sounds from pristine clarity to saturated overdrive. The preamp's class A design and high operating voltage provide a warm, musical tone that brings depth and realism to recordings.
Fast, Transparent Compressor with Auto-Attack
The Studio Channel's VCA compressor provides ultra-fast yet smooth dynamics control. With fully adjustable ratio, threshold, attack, release and gain makeup settings, the compressor can tame transient peaks without coloring the sound. An auto-attack feature offers presets for vocals, drums and more. The compressor's versatile, musical design suits a wide range of signals from vocals to bass guitar.
3-Band Parametric EQ for Precision Tone Shaping
Tailor your sound with the Studio Channel's 3-band parametric equalizer. The EQ features semi-parametric high and low bands with selectable peak/dip or shelving filters. The fully parametric mid band provides control over frequency, gain and bandwidth. With its variable Q control and +/-15dB of boost/cut per band, the EQ offers precise tone shaping to enhance the preamp and compressor's outstanding sonic performance.
Rugged, All-Metal Design Built to Last
Housed in a rugged all-metal 1U rack chassis, the Studio Channel is built to withstand the demands of professional studio use. Gold-plated XLR and 1/4" TRS connectors provide secure, noise-free connections. With its premium components and solid construction, the Studio Channel delivers years of flawless performance.

Fully Nice!
So good, I bought a second. As with most things from PreSonus, the Studio Channel is dripping with features, but also has good build and audio quality. A lot of little touches, like an instrument jack on front for, well...instruments, a big VU meter, and the ability to switch the low and high EQ individually from parametric (or notch) to shelving add to the already solid list of specs for this compact (1U) piece of gear. I/O is yet more versatile on the back panel, with a choice of line or XLR input, and either XLR or TRS output. It is quiet, and does not get terribly hot (perhaps these are the reasons why PreSonus chose to use their standard external 16V/1A AC power wart rather than an internal mains supply), and it has a nice, not-too-flashy dark blue bezel with sturdy anodized aluminum knobs, so no special care or gentle handling are needed for racking, other than making room for the wart on your power strip. Knob movement is smooth and stiff, so you aren't likely to accidentally change a carefully selected setting with the careless brush of a sleeve. In a very dark studio, indicator lights from some buttons can bleed to the next, but if you have a TubePre or a BlueTube you probably already are used to double-checking your 48V from the height of the button before you plug in that ribbon anyway. Considering how much other rackmount channel strips, like the Grace M103, or lunchboxes go for, there really is no comparison in this price range.

No I wouldn't buy it again
Overall this thing doesn't really do much that my plug-ins don't. The tube doesn't seem to do anything at all. There are audible clicks and noises when you engage any buttons, and the gain knobs make noise when adjusting. The design is terrible because there is no power button on the front and the power cord with button isn't long enough to come out the back of a rack. Also, the mic input is on the back, inside the rack. Not great.

What else can I say other than -- THE SOUND RUNS CIRCLES AROUND THE DBX 286s. I've got two of those and the Presonus Studio Channel has taken their place. It's preamp is soooo clean, the compressor and parametric equalizer are unbeatable, and the tube gives just enough warmth to vocals. It would be nice if it had a gate and de-esser, but, for the price, you won't find a better-sounding tube channel strip anywhere. Personsus should be proud of this one!
