JHS Pedals

collapse expand iconDescription

JHS Pedals teamed up with the legendary shredder Paul Gilbert to create the PG-14, a new and unique distortion pedal specifically designed to Paul's specifications. At the heart of the circuit is a FET based distortion engine that emulates the touch, feel, and the response of a pushed tube amplifier. This circuitry allows the player to have the dynamics and tone of loud, stadium-level amplifier at low/moderate volume levels.

A second unique and essential feature of the design is that an active mid-frequency preamp is located at the front of the FET distortion circuitry. This design feature gives the user a vast sweep of tonal possibilities with any amp or guitar combination.

The PG-14 is an end-all pedal for adding the ultimate dirt channel to your amplifier. A bonus feature is that it gives you all of Paul Gilbert's talent, decades of experience, and countless years of practice! Just hit the footswitch!

The Paul Gilbert PG-14 runs on 9V DC negative center power.

The mid knob adds distortion, like an amp. The 'Push' knob opens it up for a big stadium sound. Easy to find the sweet spots. Feels more amp-like than most dirt boxes.

I use the pedal to emulate the gain channel of an amp. I dial in a super clean tone from the amp, and this pedal takes over all the drive. Its really easy to match the volume of the pedal to the dialed in level of the amp.

  • A little underwhelming. Might better suit for OD.

This pedal seemed to be basically modeled as a rocking stomp to use as your channel 2 distortion. It's certainly loud and tweakable enough but, it lacks girth as a distortion. The push just seems to mush the front end and the low frequencies are really weak. I understand that in the mix lack of bass response can be pretty acceptable but, we're talking nothing. The bright side is it's make a great overdrive to push the front end of an already dirty amp or pedal. The ability to tweak the mids and input (push) are all practical solutions for this type of thing.
