Contemporary Digital Pianos Overview

Yamaha

collapse expand iconDescription

The Yamaha P-45 88-Key weighted action digital piano provides an authentic piano experience for players of all levels. Featuring Yamaha's acclaimed Graded Hammer Standard keybed and Advanced Wave Memory stereo sampling, this remarkably portable piano delivers rich, nuanced tone and natural touch response for under $500.

Weighted Keys Simulate Hammer-Strung Piano

The P-45's 88-key Graded Hammer Standard keyboard recreates the weighted feel of real piano hammers, with heavier action in the bass and lighter action in the treble. This builds proper finger technique and allows for dynamic, expressive playing across the full keyboard. The matte finish on black keys reduces slippage during extended practice sessions.

AWM Stereo Sampling Provides Realistic Grand Piano Sound

Yamaha's Advanced Wave Memory technology uses digital sampling to capture the rich, complex sound of a concert grand piano. The P-45 offers 10 high-definition voices, including grand piano, electric piano and organ. Dual mode allows layering two voices together, like piano and strings. Onboard reverb and chorus effects provide ambiance and fullness.

Lightweight, Compact Design for Portability

The P-45's space-efficient cabinet lets you enjoy premium piano performance anywhere. It's a perfect choice for home, studio, classroom or stage. USB connectivity allows interfacing with music software for recording, notation and education. A sustain pedal input is also included.

Additional Features Enhance Playability

The P-45 includes a built-in metronome to help develop a strong sense of timing. Its duo mode splits the keyboard so that two people can play side by side. An optional furniture-style stand (sold separately) transforms the P-45 into an elegant upright piano for home use.

Best Digital Piano it it's class!

I love this digital piano, it has the feel and sound of an expensive grand piano not to mention the other sounds that are included. This is my second Yamaha digital keyboard, I still have my first Yamaha 61 key and this is an upgrade. I've tried all the others and this is the best quality and value. Yamaha makes great keyboards and have excellent customer service if you need them. I've never had a problem with my first one that's about 10 years old and runs like new and they provide learning tools to customers on their website after you register.

Not exactly best for my application

I got it because my kid wanted to learn keyboards. It is a basic piano, but a little too big and heavy. There are smaller and lighter ones out these that would be better for this application. So this is not a great fit for us.

This keyboard is replacing my first (very inexpensive) keyboard as I am becoming more accomplished in playing piano. I like the weighted keys and real piano-like feel and the sound is more realistic and in tune. As advertised, a good beyond beginner keyboard to not outgrow. #sweepstakes

We were looking for a starter piano for our kids to get them started on learning to play the piano. Didn't want to invest a ton of money since we don't know how long they'll play, but still wanted a decent piano that would provide a good base to learn from. My brother is an intermediate player and recommended looking into the Yamaha brand. After doing some research myself I came across this one and decided to give it a try! So far it's been great.

  • Adequate for my needs

I guess you could call me an advanced beginner. I bought this based on the good reviews and have had it only 2 weeks. Lessons start in February. It does all that it is supposed to. I haven't figured out some of the gizmos yet, like the metronome. Some of the instruments sound too similar. My only real concern is that the highest keys don't always produce sound. I don't know if it is the selected instrument, the volume control and the machine itself.

  • Great Piano, Worth the Money

I was looking around at the store for a new keyboard and decided on this one because of the balance with price, sound, and feel. Compared to a $1100 keyboard I play for performance, this one is not much worse and works great for a home practice and jam piano. The keys feel really good, especially for the price, the sound is great (especially the strings and the overall bass), and all the features that come with it make it a great package. I would take this over basically any other cheaper Yamaha keyboard because the sound and keys on the other ones I tried (around $200-$300) were really terrible, janky and weak. This is worth the money if you're looking for a cheaper keyboard.

Is the sustain pedal that's included sensitive to intensity? (I can't remember the technical terms for it. Basically, is the pedal just an on/off switch or can it recognize if it's pushed only halfway and respond accordingly?) If not, can the keyboard recognize that kind of input if a third-party pedal is used with it?

I feel like the upper register doesn't sustain with the pedal. The notes cut off too quickly. Is this a pedal problem or a keyboard issue? Would buying a new pedal help or no?
