We asked guitarists Freaky Rob (Kendrick Lamar, Dr. Dre, Eminem) and Ari O’Neal (SZA, Lizzo, Beyonce) to honor the legacy of the Stratocaster by composing and performing four songs that showcased the guitar’s sonic power. Of course, the musical trek also allowed the musicians to venerate some mythic Stratocaster players.
In celebration of Game of Thrones’ long-anticipated final season, Fender Custom Shop has teamed up with HBO to create three unique masterbuilt guitars, each representative of the houses made famous by the hit series. The trio, dubbed the Game of Thrones Sigil Collection, includes the Game of Thrones House Stark Telecaster; the Game of Thrones House Lannister Jaguar; and the Game of Thrones House Targaryen Stratocaster. We invited Game of Thrones Creator and Guitar Center Hollywood regular D.B. Weiss and his Sigil collection to our Vintage Room just days before the finale air date to learn the backstory on the collaboration, DB’s connection to playing guitars during his off-time on set, and an unexpected twist you can anticipate in the final episode.
After walking away from the 61st Grammy Awards the winner of both Best R&B Album and R&B Performance, H.E.R.’s smooth, laid-back, R&B/pop transcended to the forefront of popular culture. That night, her electrifying performance of “Hard Place,” included the debut of a see-thru Fender Custom Shop Acrylic Stratocaster made just for the show, noted as one of the most memorable showcases of the evening.
In the 1950s, it was rare to open up a magazine and find a woman playing one of rock and roll’s most coveted instruments. Thanks to pioneering guitarists like Mary Kaye, often referred to as the “First Lady of Rock and Roll,” more women than ever are playing guitar, with artists like Nita Strauss and St. Vincent unveiling their signature models in recent years.
In 2016, we asked multi-Grammy-Award-winning country artist Vince Gill to choose 5 new guitarists to join him on stage for one night only at The Mint in Los Angeles, each competing for the chance to record their own original music with Vince in the studio, as well as open for him at one of his shows. After choosing Claudio Tristano as the winner for the evening, he shocked the audience by also inviting all 5 finalists to join him as opening acts for a future show. After a few years of touring with legendary rock group The Eagles, Vince Gill returned to Nashville for a special evening at 3rd & Lindsley with all five finalists, each joining Vince and his band for 20-minute sets of Vince classics and original music. We caught up with Vince, Arielle, Claudio, Justus West, Stephan Hogan and Tony Pierce backstage before the show to see what they've been up to since we last brought them together.
While there were tons of new-and-exciting goodies for your signal chain unveiled by some of your favorite brands at NAMM 2019, here are a few of our favorites that you’re sure to love on your pedalboard.
Fender Guitars has launched an amazing new American-made guitar that plays like an electric, but sounds like an acoustic. In fact, it can sound like any steel-string acoustic guitar you can imagine. With the form factor of Leo Fender’s first guitars, the Fender American Acoustasonic Telecaster is going to surprise you.
From the beginning, Fender has had a tradition of leading the way in American guitar manufacturing. From the first mass-produced solid-body electric guitar to today's famed Custom Shop instruments, they've been at the forefront of both innovation and quality. The new American Performer series brings all that together, creating a line of fine, Made in USA electrics at a price that boggles the mind.
