Drum Head Materials

What are the different drum head materials available and how do they affect sound?

The largest factor to any drum head is the material used. This should help you narrow down what material to use for your desired sound:

Mylar - This is the more popular type of head on the market today. Provides a great overall tone to most drums. It is pretty moderate when it comes to attack.

Calfskin – Warm, dark type of sound. It can be a little hard to keep in tune due to humidity or even temperature. This type of head is most commonly found in Concert style drums, and on some Jazz kits.

Smooth White - Produces a clean sound with a lot of attack. Clear - Heavy midrange tones. It can be considered to be crisp sounding. Some find it harsh.

Kevlar - Not as common. It is extremely durable, but can be hard on the players hands or wrists for that reason. If used on anything, it is usually only used on snare drums.
