Do I Really Need a Left-Handed Guitar?

I'm left handed. Do I really need to get a left-handed guitar?

This is a personal choice that no one can really answer except you. I know several lefties (including my own brother) who play right handed. Having that extra dexterity in your left hand puts you a step ahead of us right-handers from the get-go. It is also easier to read chord charts and tabs, since they are almost exclusively written for right-handed players. You will even have an easier time reading other players' hand positions. As a right-handed player, you will have a wider selection of guitars available. Left-handed guitars tend to be available in a much more limited selection and are usually more expensive than comparable right-handed guitars.

On the other hand (pun intended), you may not feel comfortable playing conventionally, the guitar may simply feel "backwards" to you. In addition, if a guitar you like is not available in a left-handed model, most of the time you can do what Jimi Hendrix did: have the guitar set up and re-strung for playing left-handed. In the end, the best way to decide is to pick up some guitars (both right- and left-handed) and try them. Choose whichever way feels best to you.
