Webinar: The Inside Story of the SM58 | Shure

How to choose the best mic for your vocal performance

Roger Daltrey SM58 Interview | Shure

Description
The Shure SM58 isn’t just a microphone—it’s the microphone. Loved by vocalists everywhere since 1966, it’s made to bring out bold, powerful sounds that cut through the crowd. Whether you’re belting out a ballad or addressing board members, the SM58 makes sure your voice comes through, loud and clear. Its tuned response brings out every note, letting your sound speak for itself, just the way it should. And with a build that can take on anything, this mic’s got your back, gig after gig. Ready to stand out? This is your microphone.
Ready for the Rigors of the Road
Built to survive the rigors of the road, this workhorse mic takes care of business, no matter how wild things get. Its all-metal construction keeps up with the rough and tumble of live shows, so you can rely on it, whether you're bouncing around on stage at a massive festival or crooning in a pub. With an internal shock mount to cut out unwanted noise, you can move freely without worrying about interference. No matter where you're performing, the SM58 gets the job done, gig after gig, with the clarity you need and the durability you deserve.
Hear Your Voice, Loud and Clear
When it comes to vocals, the Shure SM58’s got you covered. With a frequency response tuned just right, it brings out every detail of your voice, from smooth lows to crisp highs. Sing your heart out—soft or loud—the SM58 keeps your tone warm and clear, so you sound like you, time and again. Plus, with a built-in pop filter to tame those breathy sounds, you get a clean, pro-level performance that cuts through the noise. Whether softly addressing a crowd or reaching for an intense vocal crescendo, this mic keeps your voice front and center.
Slay Background Noise
The SM58’s cardioid pattern locks in on your voice, blocking out all the distractions—whether it’s the chatter of the crowd, a random sneeze, or that one annoying cough from an audience member that always seems to pop up. Designed to keep your vocals front and center, it works just as hard in live performances as it does in tricky recording spaces. From noisy venues to jam sessions on the fly, this mic knows how to slice through the chaos. Think of it like a bodyguard for your sound—it pushes unwanted noise aside, so your notes and words shine through exactly as you intended.
A Long Legacy of Excellence
Since the mid-60s, the SM58 has been a go-to for pros and beginners alike. Whether vamping on stage or finding your groove in the studio, this mic’s seen it all, earning its spot in many professional setups. It’s been around, it’s built tough and built to last. It’s not about fancy bells and whistles, it’s about getting the sound right, every single time. No wonder musicians and sound engineers worldwide swear by it—it just works. If you’re ready for the best, go with the SM58.

A must have mic for live use
This is a must have mic for any active musician. This mic is excellent for stage use, but it is also very useful in a studio or project studio. This mic has been my main stage mic for over 15 years. The SM58 is known to be great for live use but it is also great to use on vocal recordings. The SM58 is also a great mic to use on a snare drum (especially since it is durable). The SM58 is built tough enough to stand up against years of abuse. If you play live you need to have this mic.

Not sure if I would buy again.
I have several old Shure mics that I've owned for almost 20 years. They have never let me down. Needed an extra mic so bought the SM58. It worked well for about 1 year then quit. The mic was never gigged, never dropped, just used in home studio. Very gun shy of this mic now but while it worked it was great. I just bought the cheaper SM48 hoping to have better luck. SM58 Mic doesn't seem durable.

Is there a relatively inexpensive speaker or amp to plug this into? I currently have an amp and a speaker, neither of which accept an XLR cable (nor an XLR to stereo adapter).
You want an XLR to mono adaptor. Take a look at the "Hosa MIT435 XLR Female LO-Z to 1/4" TS Male HI-Z Microphone Input Impedance Transformer"submitted5 years ago
