Dark Terror ... surprising
Well, was looking for a low watt amp to play at home. Loved Mesa's and the Lamb of God sound, but couldn't afford one/couldn't play a Mark IV in my tiny practice room. Went with the dark terror and was pleasantly surprised. It definitely doesn't have the modern "tight" metal lows, but what it does have sounds uniquely awesome. Little loose, way dirty, waaaaay heavy. This thing is can get crazy loud too! Plenty of modern scooped heavyness with the tone nob cranked to the right. Mastodon-ish amp for sure. Found the unique tone I didn't even know I wanted...I'm an Orange boy now. PS...you definitely need a noise gate for this bad boy. It's pretty noisy (low watt/high gain, whatcha gonna do) and feeds back a lot in a small room (which is sweet sometimes!)

I got 2 defective units.
I use the product at home. I LOVED the sound for both clean and metal tones. Unfortunately, I received 2 defective unites both within return period. I ultimately abbandon the amp and going to a Katana Artist. The Katana doesn't sound as good, but it's been reliable.

Amazing sounding amp. As an amp builder, I'm super impressed with this circuit. Especially the gain structure and super wide range of tone options. This amp is blowing me away. Now I just wish it was 50 watts so I could gig with it. It records extremely well, it's great for practicing and writing. Although powerful and loud, not quite loud enough for me and my band to use live.
Love it!

I am using this in a small home studio where I also use plugins for guitar tones. I am running this through a Sonic vertical 2x12. It sounds great for mid to high gain tones. It wasn't meant to be a clean amp so it doesn't excel at that. Even in the 7 watt setting it is pretty loud so I am using a POD XT Live in the effects loop to 1. Add effects (not amp sim at all) 2. Use the output volume to reduce the level of the preamp going to the power amp. This is giving much better tone than turning the Level control on the amp down. I turn the preamp volume and gain up to where I like it and adjust the overall volume on the Xtlive to suite my needs. Any effect with a volume control should work to do the same—really adds to Tehran usefulness as a practice or bedroom amp. I was concerned about the single tone control but I am ok with it now—easy to switch between rock and metal tones and it is not just like a treble cut tone knob. I also use the parametric on my XTLive in the loop so that helps as well. Looking at similarly priced heads I think I prefer the simplicity and overall tone. I tried a few others that had more features but I couldn't dial in a tone that I liked as easily. I also tried the micro terror but this one seems more like a "real amp" to me i guess.

The Dark Terror is one impressive amp. I have mine with a Jet City 1x12 and they work perfectly together. this amp is loud! The gain on the amp is incredible! It's also nice that this amp comes with a fx loop. Only problem I have with this amp is no footswitch. This amp is perfect for playing at gigs or even at home with the 7w option. Highly recommend and they are a good price used.

Really, there's a lot I wanna say about this amp and only so much space to write. The more I use it, the more I love it. I've had it for a few months now and have used it with a few different setups. I have two guitars I use with it; an LTD 401VF les paul and and a Godin Redline 1. Both sound great with the amp, but distinctly different in immediately obvious ways. The Godin has an EMG 81 pickup, so it's tight, better for metal. The LTD has a Duncan JB pickup, which I would consider to have a rawer, more prominent upper-midrange than the EMG. Great for rock, but not really super tight for metal (though using my Fulltone OCD changes that). This amp takes well to both guitars. My 6505 made them sound a bit too similar. For cabs, I use both a Whitebox 212 with Swamp Thangs and an Egnater Tweaker 112 with a GH30. Two really different sounding enclosures (I don't use them at the same time). The Tweaker gets more of a brighter, classic rock tone, while the 212 is more modern and dark. Think the difference between old school Neil Young and Bad Religion. That's a good tonal area for me, personally. I typically run the tone knob in the 1-2 o-clock range. The amp doesn't have many options for itself, as many reviews online mention. I went with it strictly for simplicity. The clean DOES sound pretty good, but obviously doesn't have much headroom. The effects loop sounds good and works better than the one on my 6505. I mainly use to it to power a Blackstar HT5 for a bit more power (and to smooth out the GH30), but my Hall of Fame sounds great in the loop, too. The amp can compete with a drummer and bassist using just my Tweaker 112, but it would be difficult to keep up with another guitarist in the mix. Though it just has the one tone knob, I don't have many issues with the EQ. Some added options would be nice, sure. Sometimes I use an OCD, but that's about it. Overall, very happy.

Will this help me get a better sounding finished sound? Running my ESP LTD with EMG 81 /85 active pickups thru a metal distortion pedal to a Marshall MG30GFX 30W 1x10. When pedal not active clean sounds ok. Everything sounds "just ok" Hearing this and othe "Pre amps" and /or "heads" (Not sure of the difference) in some of the vids....sounds great. Does this Dark Terror have to be used with a speaker cabinet or can it be used with my current "Amp"MG30GFX 30W 1x10? I play Metallica, Rammstein, Megadeth and some 80s hairband stuff.
Yes this will cater to that tone very wellsubmitted5 years ago

can you put any orange head to any size orange cabnit?
I wouldn't say that without checking ohms.
