Boasting the style and massive sound that Eddie Van Halen is known for, the EVH Wolfgang WG Standard Exotic features exotic wood options for players with distinguished taste. The Wolfgang WG Standard Exotic spalted maple offers a basswood body with special “comfort-cut” forearm contour for maximum playing ease, along with attractive masked-off natural body binding and distinctive maple top. Its bolt-on baked maple neck with graphite reinforcement rods hold strong against the ravages of temperature and humidity, while a conveniently located spoke wheel at the base of the neck makes for quick and painless truss rod adjustments.

Designed for comfortable playability and speed, this stylish axe also features an oiled finish on the back of the neck and a 12”-16” compound radius 22-fret baked maple fingerboard with rolled edges and black dot inlays.

Dual EVH Wolfgang humbucking pickups mounted directly to the body increase vibration transfer, resulting in sustain for days on end. Two domed control knobs have been dialed-in to Eddie Van Halen’s exacting specifications—the smooth-feeling 500k pots make it easy to find a unique sound while retaining the crisp high-end sparkle of the Wolfgang pickups. The EVH-branded Floyd Rose Special bridge and R2 locking nut consistently keep the instrument in tune through the deepest whammy dives and horse whinnies.

I have a lot of guitars but this is my first EVH. Obviously, Eddie knew a lot about guitars and the design of the Wolfgang series has evolved through 3 different manufacturers and multiple decades. The neck is very slim and the compound radius fretboard is nice. The headstock is very small and makes it look like it's a short scale. It's not, it's 25.5" just like a Strat. The guitar is very resonant. The tuners are good. The Floyd Rose is supposed to be flat on the deck. Eddie's spec was to set it up for dives only. FR's take some special care. Get a 3mm long handle T Allen wrench. It's much easier to adjust and tighten things with instead of the regular "L" shaped one. Some upgrades are available for the FR too - a brass block and titanium retention clamps are 2 of most popular. The retention clamps for the strings will wear out so you will need replacements eventually. The pickups are lively and they definitely have that certain sound. They are located under natural harmonic positions so they pick up the overtones well. They also clean up well at lower volumes. Fret sprout can be an issue. I returned a guitar Wolfgang Special that I bought from a different store because the fret sprout was outrageous and sharp. The Specials are made in Mexico and the Standards are made in Indonesia. Maybe it was a quality control issue for the Mexico factory as I have other recent Mexican Strats that were poorly finished and were set up atrociously. They are excellent now though. I noticed some minor issues - the string clamps were not tightened enough and a string pulled out. The neck had a loose screw too. Nothing that a quick check wouldn't fix. I usually check every screw first before I tune and play but I was so eager. I usually loosen and then gently retighten all the plastic screws to prevent the plastic from cracking. Factories usually use electric screwdrivers and things like that can be too tight or stripped so I always adjust them. The plastic covers fit perfectly and they are recessed flush with the body - nice job! The back is a beautiful wine red transparent and it's impressive. The pots are Alpha made in Korea, which are usually excellent. There's some shielding too. All in all, the Wolfgang is one of the best models of guitars you can possibly get. They come in several price ranges and even the entry level ones have good enough bones to be astonishingly good. I would seriously consider just playing Wolfgangs and never needing anything else - they are that good!
