The D12 VR is a large-diaphragm cardioid dynamic microphone. Designed specifically for kick-drum recording applications, the microphone has a thin diaphragm to enhance the low frequency performance. Its predecessors have been the industry standard in kick drum mics for decades. The D12 and subsequently the D12E and the D112 have been the choice of drummers and the live sound engineers who love them since 1950.

Without phantom power, the microphone delivers the pure character of the sound source. With phantom power enabled, one of three switchable active-filter presets can be used to quickly adapt the microphone response to suit the desired kick-drum sound. The filter setting can be controlled using a switch on the microphone body. In this mode the output level is also reduced by 10 dB automatically.

Check it out. The latest version of a classic. It has retained the attributes of the original but taken advantage of modern innovations. Vintage and modern have just met up, and they have done so in front of the kick drum head.

    This microphone has some interesting options that allow the engineer to tailor usage to specific sources. Inside a kick drum, engaging the active circuit with bass shelf captures a murderous punchy sound that I have only heard in sample libraries before this mic. On a bass guitar, using the low & high shelf active circuit results in a deep bottom with articulate highs that are neither bright nor crispy. For a smoother, classic dynamic sound, don't use phantom power & run the D12VR in passive mode -- great for brassy instruments. I would not recommend this mic for vocals, harp, piano, banjo or any other instrument that needs a balanced, uncolored sound. This is a high-quality bass monster that has made it possible for my studio to reproduce tight bass in rock & pop music. The mic itself has a little weight to it & some folks comment that it resembles different things like Thor's Hammer for example. It has a sturdy, resilient design that I expect to last many years. It is easy to set in place because of its pivoting neck & can get point-blank up to a source. I recommend this mic for professional drummers & bassists on tour or in the studio.

    I have been using the AKG D112 for about 13 years and had an old D12 back thru the late 80's and this new D12VR is a much better build quality then the original D12 and the new Active eletronics in the D12 VR make this thing very versital across many drum kits. I just did a three day feastival this past week end and used this thing with 24 different bands and it was a hit with every drummer.
