Neumann

collapse expand iconDescription

The Neumann KM 184 small-diaphragm cardioid condenser microphone combines impeccable sonic performance and robust build quality in a space-saving design. Perfect for recording acoustic instruments, percussion, strings, and vocals in project and professional studios alike, the KM 184 captures sound with stunning realism, sensitivity and clarity. Its transformerless circuitry and pressure-gradient transducer yield a frequency response free of coloration and distortion, even off-axis, allowing it to handle sound pressure levels up to an incredible 138 dB.

Neumann Capsule Technology: Unparalleled Accuracy and Detail

At the heart of the KM 184's lifelike sound is Neumann's handcrafted condenser capsule, which has been meticulously engineered to translate sonic nuance into electrical signals with peerless precision. The result is a microphone able to capture the subtle textures, timbres and dynamics that shape the character of any source.

Compact and Roadworthy

Despite its formidable capabilities, the KM 184 has a low-profile chassis measuring just 80mm in length. Its rugged yet lightweight design makes it ideal for location recording, allowing engineers to capture professional-grade audio anywhere inspiration strikes.

Transformerless Circuitry: Pristine Signal Path

The KM 184's transformerless output stage provides a clear, uncolored signal path from capsule to converter. Without the phase shift and roll-off associated with transformers, the mic exhibits an extended frequency range, greater transient response and lower self-noise. The result is audio of stunning depth, openness and realism.

Time-Tested Reliability

Like all Neumann microphones, the KM 184 is handcrafted in Germany to the most exacting standards. Its durable components and thoughtful engineering ensure years of flawless performance, even under heavy use in professional studio environments. With proper care and maintenance, the KM 184 will deliver Neumann's signature sound for generations to come.

I purchased this specifically for recording acoustic guitar and I only regret not being able to afford a matched pair. I first tested this mic on its own and then as a spaced pair with an AT4033. I love my 4033 and have had okay results from it but I always thought it was something I was doing wrong because it's supposed to be a good choice for acoustic guitar as well as vocals. But with the KM 184 I only needed to move it around the fit my needs. For loud strumming the typical 12th freet was a good fit. When I did a lead part I aimed the 4033 at the bridge and the Neumann 184 towards the neck and body joint and this is magical! I've read other reviews that said it's a secret weapon for recording a drums as well. One thing I'd caution is that it's EXTREMELY sensitive so make sure you do not breathe on it while recording. I didn't use the windscreen so I don't know how effective it is or what the difference in sound is. The only other negatives I've read have been that these are not as good as the original ones. Those go for a few thousand dollars a piece so I mean 😅

The Neumann KM84 is a studio stable, a popular choice for any acoustic source. Long discontinued skyrocketing in price, the KM184 is the best alternative on the market. A slightly brighter, more modern sound than the KM84, the KM184 is at home in front of a guitar or over a drum set. Get a pair!

I needed a small diaphragm mic for acoustic guitar and also strings. This Neumann is a really nice addition to my studio. I usually combine it with a U67 on acoustic. This mic picks up the high-end nuances of the acoustic beautifully. I do think that the price is a bit high for small diaphragm, but I'm only using it in a home studio.
