The goatskin head is very resonant & musical & being tunable is a great bonus. I wish it came in a larger size (15" or 16").
I would reccoment this Drum

Nice drum. The lightest touch get it to ring out nicely. It doesn't take much to get this drum to sing.
Meinl Irish Bodrhan

This is my second bodrhan (pronounced "bow rann")to own. The inside tuning (with wrench included)is great and easy to use. The size, feel and tone is terrific, plus not having the traditional crossbars on the inside really make it easy to change tones (plus the smaller 14" head and deep 6" shell makes it easy to hold and keep control of the drum while moving your hand around to change tones. The tone for this small drum is warm, deep and resonant for its size. I am very pleased with it. My other bodrhan has a synthetic 16' head which definitely provides a different feel and tones (I purchased the other drum online from guitar center as well). My main reason for writing this review is to warn newcomers to this type of drum is that this meinl irish bodrhan does not come with a tipper, which is a specific stick suited for this style of drumming. Fortunately for me my other drum came with a tipper and I have since then purchased other tippers (which can affect tone and playability. There are other bodrhans like one from Pakistan which can be played beating by hand. However, this meinl Irish Bodrhan is meant to be played with a tipper. That one is not provided is my only complaint. Otherwise, this drum is lots of fun.
