Gibson Custom

collapse expand iconDescription

The Gibson Custom Murphy Lab 1964 Trini Lopez Standard resurrects a rare bird from Kalamazoo’s past. Less than 2,000 were produced during the original run, making this reissue especially welcome. It features all of the elements that made the guitar a standout in the first place—diamond soundholes, slashed-diamond inlays and six-on-a-side tuners. An Ultra Light aging by the Murphy Lab—a special division within the Custom Shop—gives it the appearance of a true vintage instrument. Available now at Guitar Center, the ’64 Trini Lopez Standard sets a new one for historical authenticity. Meet the new centerpiece of your collection.

Gibson Custom Murphy Lab 1964 Trini Lopez Standard Reissue Main Features

  • 3-ply maple/poplar/maple body
  • Solid mahogany neck with authentic ’64 medium C profile, Indian rosewood fretboard
  • Dual Custombuckers, 3-way switch
  • Kluson tuners, ABR-1 bridge, single diamond trapeze tailpiece

Classic Construction

The Trini Lopez Standard is made with 3-ply maple/poplar/maple and borrows the body style of an ES-335. The semi-hollow design allows the notes to breathe; a maple centerblock provides sustain while minimizing feedback. The neck is carved from a solid piece of mahogany. Gibson’s elite luthiers optimized the 1964 Trini Lopez Standard Reissue with the Plek Pro treatment, a state-of-the-art, computer-guided process that ensures perfect fretwork. The Indian rosewood fretboard has rolled edges for a true vintage feel.

Two Alnico III Custombuckers Deliver Legendary Tone

Handwired with CTS audio taper pots and paper-in-oil capacitors, each Custombucker has its own volume and tone controls. You’ll be able to dial in a variety of solid ’60s sounds.

Historic Hardware

Kluson single-line strip tuners are unusual for a Gibson, but the Trini Lopez Standard is a decidedly different guitar. The trapeze tailpiece has a wooden Trini Lopez diamond insert; an ABR-1 bridge is another vintage-correct spec. All of the hardware has an aged patina courtesy of the Murphy Lab.

The Murphy Touch Makes It Real

Tom Murphy was instrumental in setting up the Gibson Custom Shop. For the last 25 years, he’s perfected the art and science of aging instruments. Murphy’s team gives the Trini Lopez an Ultra Light aging—you’ll see slight lacquer checking, but otherwise, it looks like a guitar that has rarely been played over the last five decades.

The Gibson 1964 Trini Lopez Standard Reissue comes with a certificate of authenticity, and an aged brown and pink Lifton hardshell case.
