The Gibson Custom 1967 Mahogany Flying V Reissue resurrects one of the most distinctive and influential electric guitars of the 1960s. First introduced in 1958, the radical Flying V body shape initially baffled players before becoming a counterculture icon. Gibson's 1967 reissue refined the design with a slimmer, more ergonomic profile and the addition of the expressive Maestro Vibrola tailpiece. This Custom Shop recreation authentically captures every nuance of that hallowed classic.
Historically Accurate Body Shape and Contours
Every curve and angle of the original '67 Flying V has been faithfully reproduced on this reissue. The mahogany body is crafted with a dual-angled upper shoulder and lower "winged" bout shape that defined the Flying V's bold look. The rear contours and beveled edges make the guitar surprisingly comfortable to play despite its unconventional body style. From the raised center ridge to the forearm contour, you'll appreciate the improved ergonomics of the '67 redesign.
Vintage-Spec '67 Custombucker Pickups
To replicate the classic tones that made the original '67 Flying V a recording legend, this Custom Shop model employs a matched set of '67 Custombucker pickups. Wound to the same specs as the original PAFs, these pickups deliver everything from bright, snarling leads to warm, articulate rhythms. The slightly higher output yields a fatter midrange response ideal for pushing a vintage tube amp into sweet, buttery overdrive and sustain. Dial in the perfect blend of bite and smoothness using the three-way selector.
Maestro Vibrola for Signature Vibrato
One of the key appointments separating the '67 Flying V from its '58 predecessor is the Maestro Vibrola vibrato tailpiece. This period-correct unit allows you to introduce expressive vibrato effects as well as fine-tune the intonation for spot-on tuning. The Vibrola's precise yet smooth vibrato action makes it easy to unleash dramatic pitch undulations or subtle warbles for lead lines and chords alike. It's a must-have accessory for capturing the authentic vibe of late '60s rock and psychedelia.
