Schubert's String Quartet in G Major was written in 1826, but never published or performed in public during the composer's lifetime. This Urtext edition is based on the surviving autograph. This last quartet [of Schubert] is an epic 45-minute work of unprecedented intensity and profound expression. From the heartrending cello solo at the outset and dramatic tremolandos throughout to the rapid-fire exchanges of major and minor modes in the finale, this is Schubert at his most daring and innovative. The present edition takes the composer's autograph score (a working manuscript) as its sole source rather than the posthumous first edition. The 'Critical' Commentary' by editor Egon Voss underlines his painstaking procedure in deciphering closely written staves, unclear dynamics, and other ambiguous markings.--Strings magazine
