collapse expand iconDescription

Born in Corona, California, the short-scale American Performer Mustang bass delivers the exceptional tone and feel you expect from an authentic Fender—along with new enhancements and a special split-coil pickup, replicated from the original ‘70s drawings, that make it even more rewarding to play.

Classic Fender playability and style

The Modern C-shaped neck sports a 9.5"-radius fingerboard that’s comfortable for almost any playing style, along with 22 jumbo frets for effortless and accurate bending. ClassicGear tuning machines with tapered shafts offer stable tuning, while the silver ‘70s logo adds a touch of traditional vibe.

Fender American Performer Mustang Bass contours

A bass made for guitarists

The alder body on the Performer Mustang is contoured to perfection and comes in a choice of familiar and fun colors. The fit and finish is impeccable and makes for an instrument you’ll be inspired to pick and play, day after day.

Fender American Performer Mustang Bass electronics and finish

Small in scale, big in sound

The American Performer Mustang bass includes the Yosemite split-coil Mustang bass middle pickup and a growling Yosemite single-coil Jazz Bass bridge pickup, designed for rich, expressive tones. With flat-staggered pole pieces to increase output and a shellac coating that lets the coils breathe while controlling feedback, Yosemite pickups produce dynamic sounds ideal for any musical situation.

The American Performer Mustang also features Greasebucket tone circuitry that lets you shape your highs without adding bass, preserving your sound. With the Fender Performer series there has never been a better time to own a Fender Bass. The guitar comes with a gig bag.

Highly recommended bass guitar!

I purchased the American Performer Mustang Limited Edition Honey Burst Satin finish, from my local GC and am very pleased. Unlike the four traditional gloss colors offered on the website, mine is a honey burst (think the color of honey) in a satin finish. Additionally, mine has the maple fretboard, whereas the website only offers the rosewood configuration on this Performer Mustang. I suppose it's those two different items that makes mine a limited edition, but I need to call Fender to confirm, as internet search are not turning up anything on it. According to the US serial number, mine was made in May 2022. The instrument feels beautiful in my hands, and Fender's craftsmanship is spot on with this guitar. Honestly, I inspected this guitar thoroughly for about 15 minutes, from top to bottom, and could not find anything wrong with the craftsmanship. My only "wish" would be a master volume controlling both pickups. As it stands, one has to turn down the volume on both pickups independently. A couple items worth noting include: - No fret sprouts - Neck is perfectly straight - no relief - No string/fret buzz - Plenty of curvy/sexy lines - Hands glide across the satin neck finish Although the instrument came strung with roundwound strings, I've already ordered a set of flatwounds, as those are my preferred choice to play. It will be interesting to hear the differences. As always, GC honored my military discount, which combined with the guitar discount, I saved 17 percent overall on my purchase.

Buyer Beware!

I'm so unhappy for trusting Guitar Center for handling & then damaging my new American Performer Mustang Bass. I arranged for a store pick-up. Their brute tech made a quick look down the neck, carelessly took a screwdriver to adjust the truss rod without getting my permission & left a nasty gouge out of the pick guard.

I thought the pricing was about right for an American made guitar, I especially like the short scale as I usually play guitar. I am comparing it to a Gibson, SG Bass and they both get the job done, with big sounds and a shortened scale. I wasn't sure about a Mustang Bass, but something about the strings through the body and the pickups makes it have a great vibe. With Labella strings, made for the mustang bass, this gets down. They only had the Red in stock, but Mustang basses were usually red anyway. Can't seem to put it down.

Quality materials and workmanship resonate throughout this bass. The additional J pick up adds some cool snap without muddying the waters. The tiny mustang pickups have an incredible amount of low end.

  • Beautiful and a blast to play!

Great feel to the neck and fretboard. Color subtle, snappy (Satin Surf Green) with very good workmanship overall. Pickup combo allows plenty of boom and range of tone. It's little, but mighty!

The spec sheet and the pictures show a different amount of frets on the bass. Are the pictures different from the bass being sold or is the spec sheet for a different bass altogether?

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. This has 19 medium-jumbo frets. We will contact Fender about this. Thanks!

You list the neck with as 1.5 at the nut, I believe it should be 1.625. Which is correct?
