Description: Sleepytime Serenade begins with the melody line in the LH, which crosses over the RH for the softer measures. The B section goes to the key of B flat. Pedaling is used throughout. The piece ends in the upper register with an ascending pattern. Purpose: This piece gives students an opportunity to perfect the overlapping pedaling technique. Reading skills are enhanced, as well as hand-crossings. Both RH and LH have ledger line notes between the staffs. There are a wide range of dynamic markings. A smooth, legato sound will musically portray its title. Suggestions for Instruction: Practice the LH with pedal. Play the RH alone, keeping fingers close to the keys and rocking wrists gently as you play the melodic intervals. Try to make the crescendo and decrescendo passages noticeable. The upper register ending is soft and relaxed. Key: F Major
