Born in Wisconsin in 1926, Hoiby is one of America's most prominent composers of works for the lyric stage. This piece is a setting of a letter by Jesse Givens, Private First Class U.S. Army, killed in Iraq on May 1, 2003, to his wife and children. He asked his wife to only open the envelope if he was killed.
