Seems pretty good ..

I'll know more in a few mos., but seems pretty good. I'm mainly a guitarist. I have an Alesis electronic kit and I took some drum lessons at, yes, GC about a year ago (thought it would improve my time and rhythm, and it did). I spent about a year gathering input for the purchase of an acoustic kit, partly so I will have something drummer friends want to play when they drop by. Every mfg seems to have a similar kit the same price point, with similar reviews. I happened to drop by Medford GC, not intending to buy a drum kit. Strangely, a competitor's product I had selected as the leading contender about a year ago was on sale $200/off -- and I didn't buy it. (Don't know why). I have seen a lot of reviews of other kits complaining about hardware. On this one as far as I can tell everything is pretty sturdy, and I like the Gretsch bass drum pedal better than the DW one on my Alesis, and better than the one on the GC lesson kit. Another criteria was I wanted name brand cymbals. Don't know if these Zildjians are "good", but they are way better than the garbage can lids I was learning to play drums on at GC. :-) The kit did not come with any instructions, what? Has no one at Gretsch ever been to IKEA? I've been around music equipment for along time, so I guessed my way through assembly until it came to putting heads on the bass drum and floor tom. I found an "official" Gretsch Youtube video on this with a walk-through. (This bass drum has a plastic "catch" for the pedal on the hoop that is not in the video, so that was something of a puzzle). BTW, maybe a piece of paper with the link would be good? Or a scan code? FYI, in this kit the toms hang from the cymbal stands rather than on top of the bass drum. They seem secure enough (and arguably give the bass drum freer sound). Until my drummer friends come over and critique the kit I can't say if it's "really good" or "not so much". But I will say it is more fun than hammering on the Alesis, which I like a lot.
