The Catalina Maple series starts with the Gretsch maple formula shell. Gretsch carefully developed the maple shell specification to produce tones that explode with attack and volume, and project a balanced amount of warm, low-end frequencies. All Catalina Maple shells are 7-ply, 7.2 mm. Gretsch equipped the shells with "Gretsch Classic" features and hardware, including 30-degree bearing edges, fully adjustable Gretsch ball-and-socket tom holder with 12.7 mm tom arms, 9020-style mounting brackets and their famous 5-lug configuration (a standard Gretsch feature for over 50 years) for all 10" and 12" toms. The rounded badges on this five-piece shell pack are a first on any Catalina Maple kit.

All drums feature a multi-step lacquer process that produces an extremely glassy-smooth finish that is hard and durable. In addition, Gretsch partnered with Evans drum heads to produce a distinctive "Gretsch by Evans" batter and resonant head combination.

Catalina Maple drums are easy to tune and produce full tones right out of the box. Add-on drums are also available to allow for further drum set expansion.

    The rack Toms come assembled and easily tuned. The snare rattles when the small Tom is played, still trying to fix that. The bass drum and Toms sound great, but I'm not really liking the snare, but I will keep tuning to see if I can somehow get it up to my liking. Overall a great kit under $1000, and even though they're made in China, the quality is very good. I wanted some made in USA dw maple shells, but that would've left little to no money for hardware and cymbals. I'm happy for now but still want the DW shells. Someday I will get DW and pass these down to my children.

    I just wanted to make sure that this is false advertising. This is not a great deal, it's not even a good deal. They are advertising this as $400+ below the list price when in fact they are selling it for list price. Personally I still love the drum set. It is responsive and versatile as promised with a great aesthetic look.

    We have a lot of options as far as hardware goes. It comes down to personal preference as far as size and brand.
