Awful Quality, wrong product?

I bought this as a headphone adaptor for my Baldwin Pianovelle RP88. It went from sounding majestic to a 80s vhs tape that's had one too many summers in the attic. The sound makes my ears cringe. Others are saying you have to use screw in headphones, I plugged mine in. That may be the issue. Definitely going to be returning these.
