Electro-Harmonix

collapse expand iconDescription

The Electro-Harmonix Classics USA Big Muff Pi distortion/sustainer guitar effects pedal is the stompbox that set the standard for fuzz tone. For over 40 years, the Big Muff Pi has been revered by guitar legends and contemporaries alike for its rich, creamy distortion and violin-like sustain.

Dial in Your Perfect Distortion

Like the original '70s Big Muff Pi, the reissue features three controls—Volume, Tone and Sustain—that provide a spectrum of distortion styles. Crank the Volume for a boost to cut through the mix, increase the Sustain for endless sustain and harmonics, and sweep the Tone from a warm, bassy purr to a sharp, trebly bite. With just a few tweaks of the controls, you can achieve the signature Big Muff Pi sound or forge your own.

A Piece of Music History

The Big Muff Pi earned its status as a legend for its use on countless classic rock recordings. Guitar gods, such as David Gilmour, Carlos Santana and Jimi Hendrix relied on the Big Muff Pi to create their iconic tones. Today, contemporary artists from Jack White to Muse keep the tradition alive with the Big Muff Pi on their pedalboards. With a pedigree like that, the Big Muff Pi shaped rock music as we know it.

Roadworthy and Gig-Ready

Despite its historic roots, the Big Muff Pi is not just a relic of rock's golden age. It's a workhorse pedal built for today's players. The compact, rugged enclosure can withstand the rigors of the road while the simple, intuitive controls make it easy to dial in your tone on the fly. Power it with a 9V battery or any standard 9V DC power adapter (sold separately).

Look Out Hendrix

I reserached this pedal before buying it and found out that Hendrix died in 1970, and this pedal hit the scene in 71. Although hendrix got to play on a prototype, it will make you thing he is playing for you when you plug this into your rig. I play classic rock with this pedal and there is no substitutes, match this to my mexican strat, and my 65' reissue deluxe reverb, and you can smell the 60's. It doesnt really have a mild, it's more of that all out crazy Hendrix distortion, and distorted harmonics. The tone control is a liesaver and can dial in any soudyou need form a Hedrix bass, to a violin like treble. It's very affordable and if I had to trade evey pedal I own, I would for this one.

Not built to last

I love the sound this pedal makes -- even my bass sustains like a cello on it -- but unfortunately the insides are not built as tough as the big sound would suggest. After owning mine for just over a year, the footswitch started to loosen from the inside and then, one day in practice, permanently failed. This is not a stomp box -- engage the switch gently -- which just doesn't help if you're up on stage rocking. Bummer, ya know?

  • Garage Rock in a Box!

If garage rock was a pedal, the EHX BMP! this bad boy for almost a year now and it held up. My only gripe is now they sell the pedal with the better knobs when they did not when I purchased it. Overall, this fuzzbox is a workhorse of a pedal and will serve the purpose it was made for.
